Gestern morgen bin ich mit einer Horde von trist dreinschauenden Geschäftsleute, allesamt in Grau oder Schwarz gekleidet, in ein Flugzeug Richtung Antwerpen gestiegen um ein Editorial Shooting für einen meiner Kunden zu machen. Vor der Kamera waren diesmal die 9 Schauspieler der Deutschen “Das Haus Anubis” Serie und nach Antwerpen gings deswegen, weil die Serie dort gedreht wird. Den Namen der Serie hatte ich schon Mal gehört, aber weiter wusste ich nichts davon. Jetzt weiß ich immer noch nicht viel von der Serie selber, aber die Anubis Schauspieler sind sehr cool, locker und lustig. Sie sind alle noch schön auf dem Boden geblieben, entspannt, nicht von der Aufmerksamkeit verdorben, was es leider so oft gibt und dadurch lief das Shooting perfekt. Die “Arbeit” (eh das falsche Wort) hat wirklich Spaß gemacht und dank stundenlangem Grinsen, Springen, Tanzen und Raufen sind wirklich authentische und lustige Bilder entstanden. Bei den Fotos nimmt man es ihnen ab, dass es wirklich lustig war und Spaß gemacht hat, das klappt nur wenn man, auch wenn nur kurz, die Energie richtig bündelt und die Atmosphäre passt. Jetzt bin ich gespannt was die Grafik aus den Fotos macht und wie das Layout wird… Das ist der Teil den ich nicht mag, da musst du deine Arbeit abgeben und kannst nur hoffen, dass es dann so umgesetzt wird wie du es dir vorgestellt hast. Bin schon gespannt! Was mir aber auf jeden Fall wieder bewusst geworden ist, wieviel mehr Spaß, Herausforderung, und whatever mir ein People-Shooting gibt, anstelle von einem typischen Modeshooting. Es geht dabei eben nicht um die Klamotten, das Makeup, die Kulisse, sondern um die Person und darum irgend ein Element zu finden was die Person ausmacht. Mode mag ich wegen der Ästhetik, dem Design, der Fantasie, aber menschlich interessant ist es nicht wirklich.  Irgendwie reichts mir gerade mit dem Glanz und Schein und mich interessiert mehr was hinter den Fassaden zu entdecken ist. Ich will mit “echten” Leuten zu tun haben, Künstler, Musiker, Schauspieler, Bauarbeiter, Lehrer, Schriftsteller, egal! Den Horizont erweitern, so cheesy wie sich das anhört. Und, obwohl es gestern auch um die Character ging die die 9 Schauspieler in der Serie spielen, und dadurch trotzdem wieder um die Fassade, hat es geklappt das in den Fotos die Persönlichkeiten der Crew zu sehen sind.

Sadly, my California trip is over, I’m back home, but I wish I could’ve stayed longer. I could get used to the flip-flop & shorts lifestyle again, being up and in the water at sunrise, eating good Mexican food and living by the sea… The magazine assignment and the PR and advertising shoot for my brother’s surfboard-building company, Ventana Surf Co. (homepage), was a lot of fun and full of new experiences. I had to shoot everything from portraits, to product shots, to landscapes to surf actions shots in the water, so definitely a very cool set of challenges. It was great to step out of my photographic comfort zone. Most of my work, advertising and fashion, is done in more or less controlled environments (studios, indoor locations) and most often using artificial light. But these past ten days essentially nothing was controlled. I shot everything with available light and nature determined the schedule. Together with the Ventana boys, my brother Martijn and Tyler, we waited for good weather, we waited on good waves, we cursed at the tides for ruining promising Pacific swell, we were up before sunrise and in the water to catch the magic hour of light and in all of these situations had to work with what we were given. The most fun but also the most difficult shots to get were the surf action shots from the water, the last day in Santa Cruz I probably spent 3 to 4 hours in the cold Pacific in the impact zone trying to catch my brother and Tyler on their boards. Luckily in the end everything came together and I managed to get all the shots that I wanted and had a great time doing it all! There is not much more to ask for. Leise rieselt der Schnee // Insgeheim hatte ich mich schon auf sonnige Frühlingstage gefreut und nicht damit gerechnet so bald wieder so tief im Schnee zu versinken wie gestern und heute. So kann man sich halt manchmal täuschen… Die Jungs und ich waren gestern und heute im Zillertal, eingeladen von snowstars.net (>> snowstars.net Website) und Cast of Art eine Nacht in 2000m Höhe in einem Iglu zu verbringen. Gestern musste ich im heftigen Schneetreiben und starkem Wind irgendwie versuchen vernünftige Bilder machen, heute morgen wurden wir dafür kurz mit herrlichem Wetter belohnt: Sonne und 30cm frischer Powder-Schnee. Kurzerhand haben wir uns beeilt und ein paar Image-Bilder für die neue Winterkollektion von Ziener ( >> Ziener Website) gemacht bevor der Schnee wieder aus den Wolken gerieselt kam und uns einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht hat.

South of the Border // Erinnerungen an Foto-Produktionen in Kapstadt, wo die Umstände manchmal auch abenteuerlustig waren, kamen bei mir hoch als ich für meine beiden Shootings in Mexico letzte Woche die Mannschaft an der US/Mexiko Grenze in Tijuana abholen musste. Tijuana ist berüchtigt für Überfälle und Kidnappings von Touristen und ist genau so berüchtigt für korrupte Polizisten. Der allgemeine Rat: nicht verirren!

Alles lief gut an der Grenze, die Produktion auch. Ich war ziemlich beeindruckt von der Professionalität der beiden Models, Lindsay und Megan, und dem Allround-Talent von Jeanette, Ex-Model und mittlerweile H+M und Styling Multitalent aus San Diego. Lindsay bekamm die pazifische Strandbranndung zu spüren und schaffte es irgendwie sich in Highheels auf den glitschigen runden Steinen aufrecht zu halten. Shootings am Meer haben halt ihre Tücken. Aber, sie bieten auch ihren Spaß… Egal wie nass, kalt, heiß, schwierig, ect., ich war in meinem Element. Hauptsache eine Kamera in der Hand und Ideen zum Leben bringen, das macht mir immer noch am meisten Spaß. Jedes Mal wenn ich einen Job hinter mir habe wird mir das wieder bewusst.

Danke an Katharina für ihre wunderbaren Kleider die sie mir zur Verfügung gestellt hat und genau soviel Dank an die Mädels in San Diego!

Mal etwas anderes zu Abwechselung: die letzten drei Tage bin ich quer durch die Republik gefahren um den offiziellen Launch von Bucherer Deutschland zu dokumentieren. Also als Reporter, nicht als Inszenierer. Als Beobachter der keinen Einfluss über den Ablauf hat sondern nur reagiert und die Momente einfängt – also Mal ganz anders als ich es sonnst gewohnt bin. Bucherer verkauft sehr schöne und unglaublich teuere Uhren und Juwelen und dementsprechend ging es im Hamburg am Jungfernstieg dann auch zu. Es hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht, vor allem die Abwechselung und die neuen Herausforderungen, die machen meinen Job eben zum Besten den ich mir vorstellen kann!

Nothing beats packing the VW van full of goodies and gear and hitting the road. This time we thought we’d try out “Ilse” the bus in the winter… so we organized snow shoes, winter gear, bought a full tank of gas to feed the heater and piled some good food into the cupboards and headed south. South means Austria, don’t forget!

Along the way we decided to make a little detour to a frozen waterfall that I knew of and promtly ran into our first adventure: Ilse got stuck in deep snow. Eventually a “friendly” local speaking a language we thought we spoke as well had mercy on us and pulled us out of the ditch. After that things went smooth.

Sometime in the afternoon we found a deserted road below the mighty peaks of the Wilder Kaiser and parked Ilse. We cranked the heater up, cooked up a serious bowl of noodles and enjoyed the 5sqm of VW bliss. After a Jägermeister or two we didn’t even notice the sub-zero temperature outside anymore…

On Thursday I packed a bag and hitched a ride to Berlin to see Mark, a really good (old) friend from college, and his wife Manu, who stopped over from far-away Minneapolis on their way to Sicily. There were all sorts of good practical and sensible reasons not to leave town, but I am very glad I took the 12-hour ride up and down to see them. Good friends are rare and are worth their weight in gold!
