Sometimes things just work out and luck and timing dance hand in hand. I arrived in Santa Cruz, California a few days ago for ten days of shooting – two jobs and a personal project! This time the two jobs are different from regular assignments: the “client” on the first job is actually my brother! He just started his own company, Ventana Surf Co. building custom-made hollow wooden surfboards and asked me to design a new website and to produce all the artwork and product photos and videos for the site. So this is a rare occasion where my brother’s world meets mine and I can help him with the things that I know about and have fun doing it. The other job is an editorial assignment for a surf lifestyle magazine and this is going to be a special challenge for me: I’m shooting all the photos for a 10-12 page spread and will also be writing the story! Definitely a premier for me but a challenge I can’t wait to get into. I really like writing but I’ve never had the opportunity to combine that with photography. But with a little help from the editors at the magazine I know it’s gonna be cool. Best of all: the story is going to feature my brother and his surfboards! I told the editors about his boards one day and they asked me to turn that into a story. So far that has translated into a week of water actions shots, portraits, and lifestyle images, early mornings and a healthy variety of very tasty Mexican food – essentially a dream assignment for me!
