Friendship and other non-tangible assets

August 12th, 2007

There is a lot of talk about the world becoming a smaller place thanks to Internet technology and online services like Facebook, MySpace, bla, bla, bla, but if a friend of yours lives 10,000km away on another continent the world is still a god damn big place. Meeting somebody in person, talking, laughing, joking together is worth more than a thousand blog entries, emails and Skype calls and that is a good thing.

On Thursday I packed a bag and hitched a ride to Berlin to see Mark, a really good (old) friend from college, and his wife Manu, who stopped over from far-away Minneapolis on their way to Sicily. There were all sorts of good practical and sensible reasons not to leave town, but I am very glad I took the 12-hour ride up and down to see them. Good friends are rare and are worth their weight in gold!
