At the "office"

July 26th, 2007

To be honest, it was never a wish of mine, but thanks to the digital revolution I spend most of my time working behind a computer screen. Photography is a full-on digital endeavor where I juggle pixels, color profiles, bits and file formats. Communication is PC-based and I operate in a virtual environment. And all of this is pretty cool if you ask me. It comes with some drawbacks though: you sit on your ass a lot, you stare at a square glowing box and the fruit of your labor is a massive collection of zeroes and ones stored on a magnetic disk. Probably the worst aspect of it all is that you don’t interact with people face-to-face. So my solution, thanks to the luxury of a laptop, flash memory and an external harddrive, is to pack a bag with the necessary equipment and leave the house. Lately my “office” has been relocated to a coffee shop close to the university. The big benefit of this American-style, bagel-and-brownie infested joint is a free WiFi connection. This way the work that I have to get done, which often enough isn’t exactly the most fulfilling activity I can image doing, is easier to handle. I can people-watch and marvel at how many beautiful girls live in Munich and feel like I’m at least a bit part of normal life. I still sit on my ass a lot though, but that’s another story for another time…
